Elliott Lee Grimes, 39, was 26.9 to 37.25 N.C. Depart ment of Corrections follow ing a jury finding him guilty of the Sept. 8, 2018 burglary of a home in Windsor. Grimes was convicted Oct. 10 after a four-day trial pre sided over by Superior Court Judge J.C. Cole. Grimes was convicted of seven felonies stemming from the case in which he burglarized the home of Tim Bazemore Sr. According to testimony. Grimes and three other indi viduals forced their way into Bazemore’s home and held the victim at gunpoint. The victim was dragged through his home, and they demand ed he open a large gun safe where they believed a large amount of cash was stored. Bazemore refused to open the safe, so Grimes and the other victims shoved him out of the way and pulled the entire safe out of the house. The perpetrators left Ba zemore lying on the floor in his home and loaded the safe and five stolen guns into Grimes’ car and drove away. Sheriff’s office provides additionai schooi security LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office has provided ad ditional security measures for Bertie County Schools - both public and private. Bertie County Sheriff John Holley and Chief Deputy Kenny Perry provided an update to the Bertie County Commission ers earlier this month. “We still participate in active shooter training annually,” said Sheriff Holley. “One of the problems we found was that during a lock- down, the department was hav ing a problem getting into the schools,” he added. The solution to the problem came with the installation of lockboxes at all of the schools in Bertie County. See SECURITY, A6 MICHELLE LEICESTER Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSDR - The Spook tacular 5K, 1-mile Fun Run/Walk and Jamboree are celebrating 10 years on Saturday, Oct. 26. The annual Spooktac ular will begin at 8:50 a.m. with the opening ceremony. The 5K Race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the 1-Mile Color Fun Run/ Walk at 10 a.m. Both begin on York Street, behind Town Hall, and end on York Street near Livermon Park. The 5K course is USATF certified. Winners of the cos tume contest for chil dren and adults will be announced at 11:30 a.m. The awards for the 5K race and winners of the raffle will be at 11:45 a.m. There will be lots of other activities in addi tion to the 5K and 1-Mile Color Fun Run/Walk.
